INTERNSHIP PROGRAM GUIDELINES
Mission
The 8th Infantry Illinois National Guard Association is a group
of veterans who still want to serve. As a 501(C) (19) not for profit organization
we provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship within our community. Since
1974 we have gathered to share experiences, knowledge, and good times while
preserving the principles of group solidarity, camaraderie, military excellence,
and integrity as exemplified by the Old Eighth Illinois
Description
The 8th Infantry Illinois National Guard Association offers
interns the opportunity to work closely with military veterans, programs and
activities in order to gain a working knowledge of a busy and successful non-profit
veterans organization. Interns develop a wide range of organizational and administrative
skills. Internships are focused toward the goals and objectives of the individual
project.
Qualifications
Qualifications vary for each internship position. Preference
is given to those who demonstrate the following qualities and experiences:
- Excellent written and oral skills
- Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
- Interpersonal skills and ability to deal with public
- Organized, methodical work habits and attention to detail
- Ability to work creatively and with limited resources
- Basic working knowledge of computers, including Word and Excel
Hours and Compensation
Flexible part-time hours, but a minimum commitment of 2-4 hours
per week is required. These are unpaid positions. Chicago Public School Service
Learning credit may be available.

INTERNSHIP PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS
Winter/Spring Internships January - May Applications due: December 1
During the Winter/Spring term, special projects are available
in curatorial, oral history, web design and marketing. Please specify your preferred
area of interest in your application. Deadline to Apply: December 1.
Curatorial (Collection Inventory)
The 8th Association is seeking interns to assist with inventory
of the 8th Association's museum collection. Interns will gain working knowledge
of curatorial practice while documenting the Museum's collection of military
and historical artifacts. Candidates must be detail oriented, organized and
able to work independently. Strong writing skills and experience handling delicate
objects a plus. Interns must be available for a minimum of 20 hours during the
term.
Graphic and Web Design
The 8th Association is seeking a creative, dedicated web/graphic
design intern with experience or interest in web design to help with the creation
and expansion of our web site. Candidates must have solid basic computer knowledge
and some experience with graphic design software. Experience with html is a
plus, but enthusiasm to gain a working knowledge of web design and maintenance
is most important. Interns must be comfortable working with text and data, as
they will not only help with the creation of the web site, but also assist with
entering web content. The 8th Association is accepting applications immediately
for this position. Interns must be available for a minimum of 20 hours during
the term.
Veterans Oral History
The 8th Association is seeking an intern to assist with collecting
and cataloging the oral histories of military veterans. Interns will also help
to organize the material for use and exhibit in the associations museum. Ability
to work with staff and the public, strong research skills and ability to work
independently a must. The 8th Association is accepting applications immediately
for this position. Interns must be available for a minimum of 20 hours during
the term.
