The 178th Infantry Regiment holds a unique place in United States military history. It is the direct descendant of Militia and Illinois National Guard units founded and original manned exclusively by African Americans.

The regiment survives today through the 1st Battalion 178th Infantry (Air Assault) Illinois National Guard.
